What is Down syndrome, exactly?

Your body is made up of cells. Each cell has 23 pairs of chromosomes; the 21st pair has
an extra chromosome, which is why you may hear Down syndrome referred to as
“Trisomy 21.” Think of it this way: You’re making a cake, and the recipe calls for two
eggs, and instead you put three in. There really isn’t that much difference to the taste or
consistency of your cake, once baked, but it is different.

Along with the extra chromosome come a lot of differing physical characteristics. A
person with Down syndrome may have ears that are lower, their eyes will be tilted up,
and the space between the first and second toe will be larger than usual, to name a few. In addition to physical characters, people with Down syndrome often require medical intervention.
